The part of the plan that gets cut first

Caregiver exhaustion isn't a personality problem or a sign you love your child insufficiently. It is a predictable outcome of years of interrupted sleep, hypervigilance, and administrative combat. It also shortens the runway of the person your child depends on most, which makes your rest a clinical issue for your child.

Where respite actually comes from

  • Waiver respite hours, if your child is enrolled in iBudget
  • PPEC hours — for many families this is the only reliable weekday relief
  • Nonprofit respite grants and camps; several serve South Florida families annually
  • Trained family members. Teach one person your child's full routine before you need them, not during a crisis

Find parents who've done this already

Parent-to-parent networks match you with a family further along the same road. Parent to Parent of Miami serves Miami-Dade and Monroe with training, support, and one-on-one matching. Family Network on Disabilities is Florida's federally funded parent training and information center, and its staff know the special education regulations cold — free help before you spend money on an advocate.

The siblings

  • Tell them the truth, at their level, before they invent something worse
  • Protect a small, predictable slot of one-on-one time — twenty minutes weekly beats a big outing twice a year
  • Watch for the "easy child" who stopped having needs. That's often a cost, not a personality
  • Sibshops and sibling groups let them say the hard parts to someone other than you

Work and leave

If you're employed by a covered employer, FMLA can be taken intermittently — an afternoon for an appointment, a week for a hospitalization — rather than in one block. Get the medical certification on file before you need it. Document everything if your employer becomes difficult.

Your own care

You are allowed to need help. If you're running on four hours of sleep, snapping at people you love, or feeling like you're watching your life from outside it, that's worth telling a doctor about — the same way you'd report a symptom in your child. If things ever feel unbearable, 988 connects you to a person, by call or text, any hour.
